Cedar shakes provide a classic look that can be stained in a wide variety of colors, or left natural to weather to a silvery-gray finish.
- Beautiful, aesthetically pleasing, distinguished look
- Cedar offers excellent insulation value
- Cedar shakes are highly wind-resistant (up to 245mph)
- More resistant to hail damage when compared to other roofing materials
- Most cedar shakes come with a 20- or 25-year warranty
- Cedar is a renewable resource
- Fire-retardant shakes are available in 3 grades (A, B & C)
- Shakes can be pressure-treated with preservatives that extend their life by preventing fungal decay
Anyone considering a cedar shake roof should check with their homeowners' insurance company as part of the decision-making process, because some insurance premiums reflect cedar's luxury classification. Be sure to ask these questions:
- Does the company offer a discount for impact-resistant products?
- Is the company aware that cedar shakes are available with Class 3 or Class 4 ratings?
- Is there a surcharge for wood roofing products?
- Does any discount for impact-resistance offset any surcharge for woor roofing?
- Make sure the company is aware that fire-resistance levels are the same, regardless of product (i.e., Class A is Class A, whether you're talking about asphalt shingles or cedar shakes).
